A Cut Above at Ledgerock Ltd.

CG’s Doosan 250 and 200 Wheel Loaders make the cut with agility and speed at Owen Sound Ledgerock Ltd. quarries.

Tom Stobbe, President of Owen Sound Ledgerock Ltd., knows a thing or two about stone. His father and uncle started Ledgerock in 1958, which at that time was a landscape supply company that provided various stone distributors with flagstone for their landscaping projects. Tom joined the company in 1982 after completing college and has played an active role in transforming the business into a limestone and stone cutting business, making it one of the most complete quarrying and fabricating companies in North America.

The famous limestone rock that comes from the Ledgerock quarry is featured throughout the world in a wide array of commercial, residential and landscaping projects, including custom architecture, stone walls, fireplaces and countertops. The company has supplied stone to several large construction projects, including the Olympic Village in Vancouver, University of Toronto, Hilton Toronto Airport Hotel, HBO Headquarters in New York, and Armani Hotel in Dubai.

Now in its 60th year, Ledgerock boasts three active quarries on the Bruce Peninsula and 115 employees working in Owen Sound, Wiarton and Hope Bay. To keep pace with production, Tom recently added two new team members to his stone cutting operation: a Doosan 250 and 200 Wheel Loader from CG Equipment.

“The Doosans are fast, they’re agile, they drive easily and they’re very maneuverable,” says Tom. “For us, visibility is everything. It’s very important for us to see the tips of the forks so we can pick and choose the stones that we want. The Doosans have been great machines. They can certainly keep up to our daily requirements.”

All of the stone at Ledgerock is cut out of the ground with a saw that can penetrate 10 feet deep into the quarry, using airbags to break them loose from their cleavage planes. The Doosan wheel loaders then lift out the blocks of limestone and flagstone, following a familiar pattern throughout the day of transporting the blocks to unload at the saws and prepare them for cutting.

A true workhorse, the Doosan Wheel Loader is built to withstand the harsh, abrasive nature of a quarry. Featuring a high lift option for additional lift height and reach as well as parallel lift to keep the load level throughout the entire lift cycle, these machines offer improved fuel efficiency, versatility and productivity.

To keep the Doosans in good working order, Tom calls on CG Equipment. “CG showed up at our door one day,” says Tom. “That’s how we met and they sold us on the Doosan brand. Even being based in Owen Sound, they have no problem sending one of their service techs up to help. They have really gone the full nine yards to help support us.”
